Differences in Application Scenarios Between Red PE Pipe and MPP Power Pipe

Published by shentong 2026-07-29

Red PE power pipes are manufactured from high-density polyethylene. The all-red body facilitates identification of power pipelines. Benefiting from excellent flexibility, low-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, they are widely used in municipal pipeline projects. MPP power pipes are made of modified polypropylene and available in common type and reinforced type, featuring superior heat resistance, compression resistance and anti-creep performance. Although both serve as cable protection sleeves, they differ greatly in applicable scenarios.

Red PE power pipes feature flexible texture, easy hot-melt connection, strong resistance to brittle fracture at low temperatures and light weight, which cuts transportation and construction costs. They are suitable for shallow burial projects, including cable laying on sidewalks, community internal roads and green belts, urban old community renovation, rural power grid upgrading, as well as weak-current and low-voltage power pipeline projects in industrial parks. They fit flat terrain areas without long-term heavy vehicle rolling and slight underground soil settlement. Nevertheless, PE material has a low heat resistance limit. It tends to age and deform under prolonged high-temperature conditions, so it is not applicable to heavy-load road surfaces and high-temperature working conditions, and cannot meet the requirements of trenchless pipe jacking construction.

MPP power pipes stand out with high heat resistance, high ring stiffness and outstanding external pressure resistance, capable of enduring continuous loads from large road vehicles without softening and deforming at high temperatures. Reinforced MPP pipes are the preferred material for trenchless pipe jacking and horizontal directional drilling construction, extensively adopted in urban main roads, expressways, national highways and railway underpass projects. They are used for high-voltage cables under municipal arterial roads, underground pipelines in large commercial zones and industrial main roads with frequent heavy vehicle traffic. For key infrastructure projects featuring complex underground soil layers, continuous heavy-load road rolling, dense pipelines and inconvenient post-construction maintenance, MPP pipes deliver far better stability than red PE pipes.

Selection Guidelines

Red PE power pipes are preferred for green belts, residential minor roads, low-voltage cable projects, shallow direct burial, budget-limited projects and projects without pipe jacking or horizontal directional drilling demands. MPP power pipes are selected for urban main roads, heavy-load carriageways, high-voltage cable projects, crossings beneath highways and railways, projects requiring trenchless pipe jacking or horizontal directional drilling, and key infrastructure under long-term heavy pressure. Proper selection of pipes based on application scenarios can effectively prevent pipe damage caused by compression and high-temperature aging, extend the service life of underground cable sleeves and reduce long-term project maintenance costs.
